And Yet Another Microsoft Proprietary Format
Now, Microsoft is developing their own proprietary "XPS" format, which is the MS proprietary equivalent of PDF. Users will be able to export documents to XPS in the new release of Office.
Good luck Microsoft - go ahead and attempt to replace a widely used format with your new proprietary format, which has no real advantages over PDF.

Quotes from the MS blog:
Unlike the Office Open XML Formats, XPS does not attempt to capture the full structured richness of an Office document.
Yes. We think choice is a good thing.
So, they're writing a new export filter for a new format that won't preserve all of Office 12's unique features. Hmmm... didn't they refuse to do that for ODF?
By the way, did you notice how many times they used the word "open?" You'd think they were on the defensive or something.
And, the best line of all, from a comment:

I can imagine it now
We've decided to release this document in Office XPS format. To view it, you need Windows Vista and Office 12. Still stuck with Windows XP, Office 11, or both? Don't fret! Just go out and spend $700 and upgrade!
